Academic Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree Requirement (Main)
- Applicants need a completed Bachelor’s degree or equivalent comparable to a Danish Bachelor’s degree in both level and duration, normally corresponding to 180 ECTS.
- The qualifying degree must include 60 ECTS in Physics and Astronomy plus 30 ECTS in Mathematics and Statistics, giving a 90 ECTS programme-specific academic profile.
Note
Physics has limited intake. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission; AU ranks applicants by qualifying-degree grades, grades in Physics, Astronomy, Mathematics and Statistics, and additional relevant credits.

Standardized Test Requirement
No GRE, GMAT, SAT or other standardized admission test is published for this MSc. Selection is based on the qualifying degree, required subject coverage and Aarhus University’s programme-specific ranking criteria.

Notes
- Aarhus University requires English comparable to Danish upper-secondary English B. IELTS Academic requires 6.5 band overall with at least 6.0 band in each band. TOEFL iBT requires 83 overall and 20 per band for results before 21 January 2026, or 4.5 overall and 4.0 per band for later results.
- Accepted Cambridge routes include C2 Proficiency, C1 Advanced and B2 First at AU’s stated grades/scores. AU does not accept PTE Academic or Duolingo. IELTS and TOEFL results must be no more than two years old when the application portal opens.

Scholarships
Eligible tuition-fee-paying non-EU applicants are automatically considered for Aarhus University’s limited Danish State Scholarships. For the Faculty of Natural Sciences, awards are 100% tuition fee waivers without a monthly living grant. Selection is highly competitive and no separate scholarship application is required.

- Apply ASAP. August/September 2027: non-EU applications open 1 December 2026 and close 15 January 2027. Physics is not on AU’s currently published winter-intake list.
- Entry: 180-ECTS-equivalent Bachelor’s + 60 ECTS Physics/Astronomy + 30 ECTS Mathematics/Statistics. International qualifications are assessed after application.
- The 120-ECTS programme requires at least 90 ECTS in Physics; students choose a selective course in Astrophysics, Computational Physics, Quantum Physics or Experimental Physics, with a 30/45/60 ECTS thesis.
