UK Standard Visitor Visa - Academic & Research Visit from Bangladesh

Standard Visitor visa for eligible academics, scientists and researchers undertaking permitted UK research or formal exchange activities.

    Last Updated: 30 August 2026

The UK Standard Visitor Visa can be used by Bangladeshi nationals and eligible residents who are academics, scientists or researchers travelling to the United Kingdom for permitted research or a formal exchange with UK counterparts. Senior doctors and dentists may also undertake qualifying research, teaching or clinical practice, provided the activity does not amount to a permanent UK post.

Most academic visits are limited to up to 6 months. Eligible academics who need longer may apply in advance for a Standard Visitor visa of up to 12 months at the academic visitor fee, subject to additional eligibility requirements. Longer-validity 2, 5 or 10-year Standard Visitor visas may suit regular visitors, but each visit remains limited to a maximum of 6 months and does not replace the specific 12-month academic option.

    Document Checklist

    1. Passport / Travel Document: Valid passport or other travel document covering the intended stay in the UK. UKVI recommends providing a full copy of the passport, including pages showing previous travel and any official observations or amendments.
    2. Previous Passport(s) & Travel History: Copies of previous passport(s), visas and relevant entry/exit records to support the applicant's travel history and ensure consistency with the information declared in the application.
    3. GOV.UK Online Application & Checklist: Complete the Standard Visitor visa application online through GOV.UK, pay the applicable fee and follow the document checklist and identity instructions generated for the individual application.
    4. Cover Letter: Applicant's signed letter explaining the academic or research purpose, intended travel dates, UK host, research or exchange activity, accommodation, funding and relevant professional circumstances. The information should remain consistent with the online form and supporting evidence.
    5. UK Host Organisation Letter / Research Arrangement: Official letter from the UK university, research body, hospital or host organisation confirming the applicant, purpose, dates and arrangements for the research, formal exchange, teaching or permitted clinical activity, as applicable.
    6. Academic Qualification & Overseas Institution Evidence: Evidence of the applicant's academic or professional standing and current overseas role. For an academic visit over 6 months, provide evidence that the applicant is highly qualified in the field, usually to PhD level or above, currently works in that field at an overseas academic institution, and will not fill a permanent UK teaching post.
    7. ATAS / TB Evidence (where applicable): An Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate may be required before certain postgraduate-level research begins. For visits over 6 months, provide a Home Office-approved TB certificate where the UK TB residence rules apply.
    8. Flight Reservation: Provisional flight itinerary/reservation showing travel dates, route, and flight details, consistent with the planned schedule. Payment is not necessarily required at this stage.
    9. Hotel Reservation / Accommodation Booking: Booking confirmation covering intended stay dates, showing applicant name, accommodation name/address, check-in/out dates, and booking reference; consistent with itinerary.
    10. Proof of Occupation: Documents confirming your current professional status and ties to your home country, such as employment certificates, leave approval, pay slips, salary statements, or business-related documents (e.g., Trade License, Incorporation Certificate, MOA, Form XII, IRC/ERC). These should be recent, consistent with your application, and clearly demonstrate your ongoing occupation and intent to return after your visit.
    11. Employer / Study / Business Supporting Letter: Where applicable, provide a letter confirming the applicant's role or enrolment, salary or relevant status, length of employment or study, approved leave and expected continuation after the visit. Self-employed applicants may provide current business evidence.
    12. Personal Bank Statements & Solvency Certificate: Original bank statements (personal and/or salary account) for the last 6 months, issued by the bank and showing the bank name and contact details. Statements must be stamped and signed by an authorized bank officer (e-statements not accepted), and accompanied by a bank solvency/financial standing certificate where required.
    13. Personal TIN & ITR: Copy of the personal TIN certificate and Income Tax Return (ITR) for the last 3 tax years, along with the acknowledgement receipts.
    14. Proof of Legal Residence in Bangladesh (where applicable): Applicants who are not Bangladeshi nationals should provide evidence of lawful residence in Bangladesh.
    15. Civil Status Documents: Marriage certificate, divorce certificate, death certificate, birth certificate, or family-related documents where applicable, especially when travelling with spouse or children.
    16. Minor Applicant Documents: For applicants under 18, provide birth certificate, parental consent, parent/legal guardian identification, proof of economic means of parents/legal guardian, and custody or guardianship documents where applicable.

    Process Roadmap

    Step 1

Confirm the Academic Activity & Duration

Check that the proposed research, formal exchange, teaching or clinical activity is permitted under the Standard Visitor rules and determine whether the visit fits the 6- or 12-month academic option.

    Step 2

Secure Host & Overseas Institution Evidence

Obtain the UK host letter and overseas employer or academic-institution evidence confirming the activity, dates, applicant's role and expected return to the overseas post.

    Step 3

Check ATAS, TB & 12-Month Eligibility

Confirm whether ATAS or a TB certificate is required and, for visits over 6 months, prepare the additional evidence of high qualification and current overseas academic employment.

    Step 4

    Apply Online through GOV.UK

Complete the Standard Visitor application and pay £135 for up to 6 months or £234 for an eligible academic visit up to 12 months. You can normally apply up to 3 months before travel.

    Step 5

Upload Evidence & Attend VFS Biometrics

Upload the host, professional, financial and supporting records, then follow GOV.UK/VFS instructions to attend the applicable Bangladesh centre for identity and biometric steps.

    Step 6

    UKVI Assesses the Academic Visit

UKVI reviews the permitted activity, genuine-visitor requirements and supporting evidence and may request verification or further documents.

    Step 7

    Check the Decision & eVisa

If approved, follow the decision instructions, access the UKVI account, check the eVisa and permission details, and ensure the current passport is correctly linked before travel.

    Common Rejection Pitfalls

The proposed activity looks like UK employment

    How UnivEase helps

We help distinguish permitted academic research, exchange, teaching or clinical activity from a permanent post or other work requiring separate immigration permission.

The academic or research arrangement is not clearly evidenced

    How UnivEase helps

We help align the UK host letter, research plan, dates and overseas institution evidence so the purpose and temporary nature of the visit are clearly documented.

The 12-month academic requirements are not met

    How UnivEase helps

We help identify the evidence needed to demonstrate high academic qualification, current overseas academic employment and the permitted activity for a visit beyond 6 months.

ATAS, TB or financial evidence is incomplete

    How UnivEase helps

We help clarify when ATAS or TB evidence applies and review the funding, professional and supporting records for consistency before submission.
