UK Family Visa - Partner or Spouse from Bangladesh

Family visa for eligible partners and spouses joining a qualifying partner to live together in the United Kingdom.

    Last Updated: 30 August 2026

The UK Family Visa - Partner or Spouse is for Bangladeshi nationals and eligible residents who want to live in the United Kingdom with a qualifying partner. Both partners must be 18 or over. The UK-based partner must normally be British or Irish, settled in the UK, hold qualifying pre-settled status, have an eligible protection status, or fall within another permitted partner category. The relationship must be genuine and continuing, and the couple must intend to live together permanently in the UK.

Applicants must meet the relevant relationship, financial, English-language and accommodation requirements. For most new partner applications, the minimum income requirement is £29,000 a year, although different rules apply in specified benefit and transitional cases. First-time applicants normally need English at CEFR level A1. An initial partner or spouse visa granted from outside the UK is usually valid for up to 2 years and 9 months. If the UK-based partner is only in the UK temporarily on a work or Student visa, a dependant visa is normally required instead. Applications are completed online through GOV.UK, followed by the required identity and biometric process, usually through VFS Global in Bangladesh.

    Document Checklist

    1. Passport / Travel Document: Valid passport or other travel document covering the intended stay in the UK. UKVI recommends providing a full copy of the passport, including pages showing previous travel and any official observations or amendments.
    2. Previous Passport(s) & Travel History: Copies of previous passport(s), visas and relevant entry/exit records to support the applicant's travel history and ensure consistency with the information declared in the application.
    3. GOV.UK Online Application & Checklist: Complete the Family Visa - Partner or Spouse application online through GOV.UK, pay the applicable visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge, and follow the document checklist and identity instructions generated for the individual application.
    4. Cover Letter: Applicant's signed letter explaining the relationship, sponsor's UK status, intention to live together, accommodation, finances and relevant personal circumstances. The information should remain consistent with the online form and supporting evidence.
    5. UK Partner / Sponsor Status Evidence: Copy of the partner's current passport and evidence of their qualifying UK status, such as British or Irish citizenship, settlement, qualifying pre-settled status, protection status or other eligible permission.
    6. Marriage / Partnership & Relationship Evidence: Marriage or civil partnership certificate where applicable, together with suitable evidence that the relationship is genuine and continuing. Unmarried partners should provide evidence relevant to the applicable two-year relationship requirement and their circumstances.
    7. Financial Requirement Evidence: Evidence showing the applicable Appendix FM financial requirement is met. For most new applications this is £29,000 a year. Depending on the income source, evidence may include payslips, matching bank statements, employer letters, self-employment records, pension or non-employment income, or qualifying cash savings.
    8. Accommodation Evidence: Evidence of adequate accommodation in the UK, such as tenancy, ownership or permitted-occupancy documents. The accommodation must not be overcrowded or breach public health requirements.
    9. English Language Evidence: Evidence of the required English level, normally CEFR A1 for a first partner or spouse entry-clearance application, through an approved SELT, qualifying degree or another permitted method.
    10. Tuberculosis (TB) Certificate: Home Office-approved TB test certificate where the UK TB residence rules apply. This is normally relevant to applicants resident in Bangladesh who are coming to the UK for more than 6 months.
    11. Previous Relationship / Civil Status Evidence: Divorce certificate, dissolution order, death certificate or other evidence that any previous marriage or civil partnership of either partner has legally ended, where applicable.
    12. Proof of Legal Residence in Bangladesh (where applicable): Applicants who are not Bangladeshi nationals should provide evidence of lawful residence in Bangladesh.
    13. Dependent Child Documents (where applicable): Eligible children applying with the applicant should provide passports, birth certificates, relationship and parental-responsibility evidence, and other documents relevant to their application. Each dependant normally requires a separate application and fee.
