    The Sweden Visa for Family Members of EU/EEA Citizens is a Schengen short-stay visa category for Bangladeshi applicants who are eligible family members of an EU/EEA citizen and intend to accompany or join that EU/EEA citizen in Sweden. It generally allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

    This category applies where the EU/EEA citizen has exercised, or is exercising, free movement rights in Sweden or another relevant Member State. The file should clearly show the EU/EEA citizen’s identity, the family relationship or dependency, and that the applicant will accompany or join the EU/EEA citizen. If the case is for living in Sweden for more than 90 days, a residence card process may apply instead. 

    Document Checklist

    1. Passport (Original): ) Original passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended return/departure date, with at least 2 blank pages.
    2. Previous Passport(s) & Visa Copies: Copies of previous passport(s), recent passport bio page, and previously issued visas/stamps to support travel history, where available.
    3. Photograph (ICAO Format): Provide 2-4 recent colour passport photographs with a plain white background, 60%-70% face coverage, no eyeglasses, no head/ear coverings (unless worn for religious reasons), and no borders. Photos must be ICAO-compliant and printed on matte/semi-matte paper.
    4. Schengen Visa Application Form (Offline): Printed Schengen visa application form completed for each applicant; signed and dated. For minors, the form must be signed by the parent/legal guardian where applicable.
    5. Cover Letter: Applicant’s signed letter addressed to the Visa Officer/Visa Office explaining the purpose of travel, relationship with the EU/EEA citizen, intended travel dates, accommodation plan, and how the applicant will accompany or join the EU/EEA citizen.
    6. EU/EEA Citizen’s Passport / Identity Document: Clear copy of the EU/EEA citizen’s valid passport or national identity document showing identity, nationality, and document validity.
    7. Proof of Family Relationship: Documents proving the family relationship, such as marriage certificate, birth certificate, registered partnership certificate, proof of durable partnership, or other official family records as applicable.
    8. Proof of Dependency: For dependent children over 21, dependent parents, or other dependent family members, provide documents showing financial dependency, serious health-related dependency, or other relevant qualifying connection.
    9. Proof of Accompanying or Joining the EU/EEA Citizen: Evidence showing that the applicant will travel with or join the EU/EEA citizen, such as the EU/EEA citizen’s travel plan, residence/address proof in Sweden, employment/study/self-employment evidence, registration documents, or other proof that the EU/EEA citizen resides or will reside in the host Member State.
    10. Flight Reservation / Travel Itinerary: Provisional or confirmed travel itinerary showing travel dates, route, reservation number, and arrival/departure details. The travel plan should be consistent with the purpose of joining or accompanying the EU/EEA citizen.
    11. Accommodation / Residence Arrangement: Accommodation evidence such as host address proof, residence registration, rental agreement, hotel booking, or other document showing where the applicant will stay during the visit.
    12. Proof of Occupation / Status in Bangladesh: Documents confirming the applicant’s current status and ties to Bangladesh, such as employment certificate, leave approval, business documents, student certificate, or other relevant personal status documents.
    13. Financial / Support Evidence: Financial documents may be provided where relevant, especially if dependency, sponsorship, or support is part of the case. These may include bank statements, sponsor support, or evidence showing how the visit will be supported.
    14. Civil Status Documents: Marriage certificate, divorce certificate, death certificate, birth certificate, or other civil status documents where applicable to the applicant’s profile.
    15. Minor Applicant Documents: For minors, provide birth certificate, parental consent, parent/legal guardian identification, proof of economic means of parents/legal guardian, and custody or guardianship documents where applicable.
    16. Travel Health Insurance: Family members of eligible EU/EEA citizens exercising free movement rights are generally exempt from the Schengen medical travel insurance requirement. However, supporting documents must clearly establish the qualifying EU/EEA family-member status. 

    Process Roadmap

    Step 1

    Confirm EU/EEA Family Member Eligibility

    Confirm whether the applicant qualifies as a family member of an EU/EEA citizen and whether the travel is to accompany or join that citizen in Sweden. For stays up to 90 days, a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) is generally used.

    Step 2

    Complete the Application Form

    Prepare the Schengen visa application form carefully, keeping the details consistent with the passport, relationship documents, EU/EEA citizen’s identity proof, travel plan, and supporting papers.

    Step 3

    Arrange Relationship & EU/EEA Evidence

    Collect proof of relationship, dependency where relevant, the EU/EEA citizen’s passport or ID, and evidence showing that the applicant will accompany or join the EU/EEA citizen.

    Step 4

    Prepare Applicant Documents

    Arrange the applicant’s passport, photos, cover letter, itinerary, accommodation details, occupation/status documents, civil records, and minor documents where applicable. Translate documents where required.

    Step 5

    Book Appointment at Visa Application Centre

    Book a submission appointment at the Sweden Visa Application Centre in Dhaka and keep the confirmation with the file. Schengen applications may usually be lodged up to 6 months before travel.

    Step 6

    Submit Application & Provide Biometrics

    Attend the appointment in person to submit the application and passport, provide biometric information, and complete any applicable VFS, optional, or service-related payments.

    Step 7

    Track Application & Verify Visa

    Track the application through VFS using the reference number. Once a decision is made, collect the passport from VFS or receive it by courier if selected, and check the visa details before travel.
