    South Africa Volunteer/Charity Work Visa from Bangladesh

    Long Term Visitor’s Visa for unpaid voluntary or charitable activities with a bona fide organisation in South Africa.

    The South Africa Volunteer/Charity Work Visa is a Long Term Visitor’s Visa for Bangladeshi nationals and eligible residents undertaking genuine, non-remunerative voluntary or charitable activities with a bona fide organisation in South Africa. Under section 11(1)(b)(ii), this category may be issued for a period not exceeding three years, depending on the approved programme and visa decision.

    The activity should be clearly distinguished from paid employment. The host organisation must explain the nature and duration of the programme and confirm the support arrangement, while the applicant must show the required funds and long-stay supporting records. Applications from Bangladesh are submitted through VFS Global New Delhi. 

    Document Checklist

    1. Passport (Original): Original passport valid for at least 30 days after the intended date of departure from South Africa, with at least two unused/blank visa pages. Submit the current passport together with the required copies.
    2. Previous Passport(s) & Travel History: Full clear copies of previous passports, including relevant visa and immigration pages, where available. Travel history should be disclosed consistently with the application and supporting records.
    3. Photograph (South Africa Visa Format): Provide 2 recent colour passport photographs, 35mm x 45mm, taken within the last 30 days against a plain white background and meeting the current South Africa VFS photo specifications.
    4. DHA-1738 Visa Application Form: Fully completed Form DHA-1738 in black ink and block letters, signed by the applicant with details consistent with the passport and supporting documents.
    5. Cover Letter: Applicant’s signed letter explaining the voluntary or charitable purpose, host organisation, intended period, accommodation and funding arrangements. It should clearly state who will bear the expenses and include the applicant’s home address and contact details.
    6. South African Host Organisation Letter: Official letter on the organisation’s letterhead confirming the applicant, nature and exact period of the voluntary or charitable activity, support arrangements, responsible contact person, and confirmation that the position is not paid employment. Any stipend or allowance should be fully disclosed.
    7. Host Organisation Registration & Responsible Person Evidence: Provide evidence that the South African host is a bona fide non-profit, charitable or qualifying organisation, together with the current identity or lawful-status evidence of the responsible person or authorised signatory where required.
    8. Financial Evidence: Provide bank-certified statements for the last 6 months showing sufficient funds for the intended stay. The current official requirement references a minimum balance of R3,000 or equivalent; the overall financial evidence should remain credible for the full volunteer period.
    9. Sponsorship / Support Evidence: Where another person, company or South African organisation bears expenses, the covering or host letter should clearly identify the support provided and be backed by the required bank statement. South African bank statements should be attested by South African bank and South African Police Service.
    10. Police Clearance Certificate: Applicants aged 18 or over should provide police clearance certificates for the countries required under the current Relative Visa requirements, including countries where the applicant has resided for 12 months or longer since turning 18.
    11. Medical Report: Submit the prescribed medical report in original. The medical report should reflect the applicant’s general state of health and meet the current validity requirements.
    12. Flight Reservation: Valid flight ticket or provisional reservation showing the intended travel dates and consistent with the application. Applicants should avoid purchasing non-refundable travel tickets before a visa decision.
    13. Hotel Reservation / Accommodation Booking: Hotel booking or other accommodation evidence covering the intended stay, showing the relevant address and dates and remaining consistent with the invitation and travel plan.
    14. Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate (where applicable): Required if the applicant will travel through or stay in a yellow-fever-risk area before entering South Africa. Check the current South African yellow fever policy against the planned itinerary.
    15. Proof of Legal Residence in Bangladesh (where applicable): Applicants who are not Bangladeshi nationals should provide evidence of lawful residence in Bangladesh.
    16. Minor Applicant Documents (where applicable): For applicants under 18, provide the required birth, parental consent form, parent/legal guardian identification, custody or guardianship documents, and other supporting records required under the current minor-travel rules. 

    Process Roadmap

    Step 1

    Confirm the Volunteer or Charity Purpose

    Make sure the activity is genuinely voluntary or charitable, unpaid, and linked to a bona fide South African organisation rather than ordinary employment.

    Step 2

    Complete DHA-1738 Around the Programme

    Complete DHA-1738 in black ink and align the host, programme purpose, dates, accommodation and funding details with the supporting records.

    Step 3

    Establish the Host Organisation

    Obtain the host letter and supporting organisation or signatory evidence showing who will supervise the activity and what the applicant will do in South Africa.

    Step 4

    Align Funds, Support & Stay Evidence

    Prepare the required bank evidence together with any declared sponsorship, accommodation and travel records so the support arrangement is clear and consistent.

    Step 5

    Prepare Long-Stay Compliance Documents

    Arrange the applicable police clearance, medical-waiver verification, translations, residence evidence required for the case.

    Step 6

    Lodge the File at VFS New Delhi

    A prior appointment is currently not required. Submit the complete application at VFS New Delhi and pay the applicable visa and VFS charges through the prescribed process.

    Step 7

    Track the Decision & Check the Conditions

    Follow available VFS updates and, after passport return, review the approved validity and visa conditions before starting the volunteer or charitable programme.
