New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) - Eligible Travellers from Bangladesh

Clear NZeTA guidance for eligible travellers from Bangladesh, covering passport and travel-mode eligibility, cruise and transit use, Australian residence, fees, IVL and border requirements.

    Last Updated: 4 October 2026

The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) is a pre-travel authority, not a visa. It allows certain eligible travellers to board a flight or ship to New Zealand without first obtaining a conventional visa, depending on their passport, residence status, travel method and whether they are visiting or only transiting. An NZeTA is generally valid for 2 years for travellers and can be used for multiple journeys while valid, but the immigration permission given at the border depends on the traveller's eligibility basis and purpose.

Bangladesh is not a New Zealand visitor visa-waiver or transit visa-waiver country, so a Bangladeshi passport by itself does not normally qualify for an NZeTA for an ordinary air visit. However, a Bangladeshi national may qualify in specific circumstances, including arriving by sea as a cruise or cargo-ship passenger, holding Australian permanent residence, or transiting Auckland International Airport on a journey to or from Australia under the applicable rules. Residents of Bangladesh travelling on another passport must qualify under that passport or another recognised NZeTA basis. NZeTA approval does not guarantee entry permission.

    Document Checklist

    1. Passport / Travel Document: Valid passport or other travel document. For an online request, use the passport that will be used for travel; it must be valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand. The NZeTA details must match the travel passport exactly.
    2. NZeTA Eligibility Evidence: Confirm the specific basis for NZeTA eligibility before requesting it. This may be a visa-waiver passport, cruise or cargo-ship passenger status, Australian permanent residence, or qualifying transit through Auckland to or from Australia. Bangladeshi passport holders are not eligible solely on the basis of Bangladeshi nationality.
    3. Official NZeTA Request, Photo & Contact Details: Submit the request only through Immigration New Zealand's official NZeTA website or mobile app. Provide one acceptable photo, passport and biographical details, contact email, travel-purpose information and the required health and character declarations.
    4. Cruise / Cargo-Ship Passenger Evidence (where applicable): Provide or carry the cruise or cargo-ship booking and itinerary showing arrival in New Zealand by sea. Passengers arriving by sea are treated as visitors, not transit passengers. A Bangladeshi traveller flying into New Zealand to join a cruise cannot rely on the cruise-passenger NZeTA basis for the flight and normally needs the appropriate visa before travelling by air.
    5. Australian Permanent Residence Evidence (where applicable): Australian permanent residents should hold evidence of a current Australian permanent resident visa linked to the passport used for the NZeTA, with travel conditions allowing return to Australia. Australian temporary visas do not qualify a Bangladeshi passport holder for visitor NZeTA treatment on this basis.
    6. Transit & Australian Travel Evidence (where applicable): For NZeTA transit through Auckland International Airport, carry confirmed onward travel and any permission required for the destination. A traveller transiting to Australia must have a current visa or other authority allowing entry to Australia. Transit must remain airside at Auckland and be completed within 24 hours.
    7. Proof of Funds & Accommodation (visitor use): Eligible visitors should be ready to show sufficient funds, normally at least NZD 1,000 per month or NZD 400 per month where accommodation is already paid. Evidence can include recent bank or credit-card statements and proof of prepaid accommodation. An NZeTA is not suitable if sponsorship is required to meet living costs.
    8. Paid Outward Travel / Cruise Itinerary: At check-in, eligible visitors must be able to show paid travel out of New Zealand within the permitted stay, or a cruise itinerary or acceptable craft-owner letter where applicable. The onward destination must also be one the traveller is permitted to enter.
    9. Health, Character & Genuine Intentions: The traveller must meet INZ health and character requirements and have a genuine eligible reason for travel. A person travelling for medical consultation or treatment must apply for the appropriate Medical Treatment Visitor Visa rather than rely on an NZeTA.
    10. Proof of Legal Residence in Bangladesh (where applicable): Applicants who are not Bangladeshi nationals should keep evidence of lawful residence in Bangladesh where relevant to their travel circumstances. NZeTA eligibility itself is determined mainly by the passport, residence status or travel basis recognised by INZ.
    11. Family / Minor Travellers: Each traveller, including children, must individually meet NZeTA requirements and hold their own NZeTA where required. The online form requires a separate request for each person; the mobile app can be used to request NZeTAs for up to 10 people together.

    Process Roadmap

    Step 1

    Confirm NZeTA Eligibility

Check the passport, travel method and purpose first. For a Bangladeshi passport holder, identify the specific cruise, Australian-resident or qualifying transit basis before requesting an NZeTA.

    Step 2

    Prepare the Travel Evidence

Have the valid passport, acceptable photo, email address and relevant cruise, Australian residence or transit evidence ready, together with funds and outward-travel proof where applicable.

    Step 3

Request through the Official INZ Channel

Use only the official NZeTA website or mobile app, enter passport and personal details exactly, answer the eligibility, health, character and travel-purpose questions, and review everything before submission.

    Step 4

Pay the NZeTA & IVL Where Applicable

Pay NZD 17 through the mobile app or NZD 23 through the website. Most visitor NZeTA requests also attract the NZD 100 IVL; transit NZeTAs and certain exempt travellers do not.

    Step 5

    Allow Time & Check Status

INZ advises allowing up to 72 hours. If approved, keep the confirmation email and verify that the NZeTA is linked to the same passport you will use for travel.

    Step 6

    Complete Check-in & Border Requirements

Travel with the passport, NZeTA confirmation and outward-travel evidence. Visitors must complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration where required and still obtain entry permission at the border.

    Common Rejection Pitfalls

NZeTA Requested Without a Valid Eligibility Basis

    How UnivEase helps

We help confirm whether the traveller actually qualifies through passport nationality, cruise or cargo travel, Australian permanent residence or qualifying Auckland transit before a request is submitted.

Passport, Photo or Request Details Are Incorrect

    How UnivEase helps

We help cross-check passport particulars, travel purpose and photo readiness so the NZeTA is linked to the correct travel document and avoidable data errors are reduced.

    How UnivEase helps

We help identify when an NZeTA may not be suitable, including character concerns, medical-treatment travel or circumstances that require a conventional New Zealand visa instead.

Funds or Outward Travel Evidence Is Not Adequate

    How UnivEase helps

We help clarify the funds, accommodation and paid onward-travel evidence that eligible visitors may need at check-in or the New Zealand border, and flag cases that depend on sponsorship.
