Document Checklist
- Passport / Travel Document: Valid passport or other travel document. For an online application, upload the required passport copy; the passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand. INZ will advise if the original passport is required later.
- Previous Passport(s) & Travel History: Copies of previous passport(s), visas and relevant entry/exit records to support the applicant's travel history and ensure consistency with the information declared in the application.
- Enhanced Immigration Online Application, Photo & Translations: Complete the Dependent Child Student Visa application through INZ's enhanced Immigration Online system using a RealMe login, upload an acceptable visa photo, and pay the applicable fee. Provide English translations together with copies of supporting documents where required.
- Supporting Parent's Eligible New Zealand Visa: Copy of the supporting parent's current or pending New Zealand work or student visa and relevant evidence showing they can support a Dependent Child Student Visa. For student-visa parents, this generally requires eligible PhD study, a New Zealand Government-approved student exchange, or an eligible Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship. Work-visa eligibility depends on the visa type and applicable family-support conditions.
- Parent-Child Relationship, Dependency & Custody: Birth certificate, adoption papers or other evidence confirming the parent-child relationship. For a child aged 18 or 19, provide evidence of continuing financial dependency where requested. If custody or removal rights are relevant, provide court orders, custody documents, the other parent's consent or death certificate, as applicable.
- School Study Plan / Enrolment Evidence: Evidence of the child's intended primary or secondary school study in New Zealand, such as school correspondence, enrolment information or a realistic schooling plan. The proposed study should match the child's age, school level and the duration of the supporting parent's stay.
- Cover Letter: Parent's signed letter explaining the child's relationship and dependency, intended school study, living arrangements, custody or consent position, financial support, family circumstances and plans to leave New Zealand when the supporting parent's stay ends. The information should remain consistent with the online form and supporting evidence.
- Sponsorship / Financial Guarantor Evidence (where applicable): Show sufficient funds for the child’s living costs. Where an acceptable sponsor is used, provide the completed Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry (INZ 1025) and supporting evidence. Where a financial guarantor is used, provide the completed Financial Undertaking for a Student (INZ 1014). Also provide outward-travel arrangements or sufficient additional funds to purchase a ticket.
- Personal Bank Statements & Solvency Certificate: Original bank statements (personal and/or salary account) for the last 6 months, issued by the bank and showing the bank name and contact details. Statements must be stamped and signed by an authorized bank officer (e-statements not accepted), and accompanied by a bank solvency/financial standing certificate where required.
- Health, Character & Health-Care Evidence: Provide chest X-ray, medical examination and police certificate evidence where INZ requires them based on the child's age, intended stay and history. The parent or sponsor must also agree to meet the child's health-care costs if the child is not eligible for publicly funded health care; INZ recommends full medical insurance for the stay.
- Proof of Legal Residence in Bangladesh (where applicable): Applicants who are not Bangladeshi nationals should provide evidence of lawful residence in Bangladesh.
- Minor Applicant Documents: For applicants under 18, provide birth certificate, parental consent, parent/legal guardian identification, proof of economic means of parents/legal guardian, and custody or guardianship documents where applicable.
Process Roadmap
Step 1
Confirm Parent & Child Eligibility
Check that the child meets INZ's age and dependency rules and that the supporting parent's work or student visa can support a Dependent Child Student Visa.
Step 2
Prepare Relationship, Custody & School Evidence
Organise the child's identity, birth or adoption evidence, dependency and custody documents, school plan, living arrangements and translations where required.
Step 3
Prepare Funds, Health & Departure Evidence
Prepare living-cost evidence, sponsor or guarantor documents where used, outward-travel funds, and any required medical, chest X-ray or character evidence.
Step 4
Apply through Enhanced Immigration Online
Complete the online application, upload the supporting documents and acceptable photo, and pay the applicable visa charge. The child may apply at the same time as the supporting parent's visa application.
Step 5
INZ Assesses the Family & Study Circumstances
INZ checks the supporting parent's visa, the child's dependency and custody position, genuine school-study purpose, funds, health and character, and may request further evidence.
Step 6
Review the Decision & eVisa
If approved, check the child's eVisa validity, travel and study conditions. The visa will normally expire with the supporting parent's visa, so school and travel plans should remain aligned.
