    Latvia Visa for Family Members of EU/EEA Citizens from Bangladesh

    Schengen short-stay visa for eligible family members travelling with or joining an EU/EEA citizen in Latvia.

    The Latvia Visa for Family Members of EU/EEA Citizens is a facilitated Schengen short-stay route for eligible Bangladeshi family members travelling to Latvia with an EU/EEA citizen or joining that citizen there. It is generally used for stays of up to 90 days.

    This category applies only when the EU/EEA free-movement conditions are met. The application should clearly establish the citizen’s identity, the qualifying family relationship or dependency, and the genuine plan to accompany or join the citizen in Latvia. From Bangladesh, applications are lodged through the Sweden Visa Application Centre in Dhaka because Sweden represents Latvia for Schengen visa matters.

    This route is different from an ordinary family visit visa. Where the sponsor is a Latvian citizen who has not exercised EU free-movement rights, or the applicant intends to remain in Latvia for more than 90 days, a national visa, residence card, residence permit, or another Latvia process may apply. 

    Document Checklist

    1. Passport (Original): Original passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended return/departure date, with at least 2 blank pages.
    2. Previous Passport(s) & Visa Copies: Copies of previous passport(s), recent passport bio page, and previously issued visas/stamps to support travel history, where available.
    3. Photograph (ICAO Format): Provide 2-4 recent colour passport photographs with a plain white background, 60%-70% face coverage, no eyeglasses, no head/ear coverings unless worn for religious reasons, and no borders. Photos must be ICAO-compliant.
    4. Schengen Visa Application Form (Offline): Printed Schengen visa application form completed for each applicant; signed and dated. For minors, the form must be signed by parent/legal guardian.
    5. Cover Letter: Applicant’s signed letter addressed to the Visa Officer/Visa Office explaining the purpose of travel, relationship with the EU/EEA citizen, intended travel dates, accommodation plan, and how the applicant will accompany or join the EU/EEA citizen in Latvia.
    6. EU/EEA Citizen’s Passport / Identity Document: Clear copy of the EU/EEA citizen’s valid passport or national identity document showing identity, nationality, and document validity.
    7. Proof of Family Relationship: Documents proving the family relationship, such as marriage certificate, birth certificate, registered partnership certificate, proof of durable partnership, or other official family records as applicable.
    8. Proof of Dependency: For dependent children over 21, dependent parents, or other dependent family members, provide documents showing financial dependency, serious health-related dependency, household link, or another relevant qualifying connection.
    9. Proof of Accompanying or Joining the EU/EEA Citizen: Evidence showing that the applicant will travel with or join the EU/EEA citizen, such as the citizen’s travel plan, Latvia residence or address proof, employment, study, self-employment, registration, accommodation, or other residence-related documents.
    10. Flight Reservation / Travel Itinerary: Provisional travel itinerary showing travel dates, route, reservation number, and arrival/departure details. The travel plan should be consistent with the purpose of joining or accompanying the EU/EEA citizen.
    11. Accommodation / Residence Arrangement: Accommodation evidence such as host address proof, residence registration, rental agreement, hotel booking, or other document showing where the applicant will stay during the visit.
    12. Proof of Occupation / Status in Bangladesh: Documents confirming your current professional status and ties to your home country, such as employment certificates, leave approval, business documents, student certificate, or other relevant personal status documents.
    13. Financial / Support Evidence: Financial documents may be provided where relevant, especially if dependency, sponsorship, or support is part of the case. These may include bank statements, sponsor support, or evidence showing how the visit will be supported.
    14. Civil Status Documents: Marriage certificate, divorce certificate, death certificate, birth certificate, or family-related documents where applicable, especially when travelling with spouse or children.
    15. Minor Applicant Documents: For minors, provide birth certificate, parental consent, parent/legal guardian identification, proof of economic means of parents/legal guardian, and custody or guardianship documents where applicable.
    16. Travel Health Insurance: Eligible family members of EU/EEA citizens exercising free movement rights are generally exempt from the Schengen medical travel insurance requirement. However, the supporting documents must clearly establish the qualifying status. Travel insurance is still recommended for practical travel safety. 

    Process Roadmap

    Step 1

    Check EU/EEA Free-Movement Eligibility

    Confirm that the applicant falls within an eligible family relationship and that the EU/EEA citizen is exercising free-movement rights in Latvia or travelling there to take up residence. For a qualifying short visit, a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) is generally used.

    Step 2

    Complete the Application Form

    Complete the Schengen visa application form accurately and identify the EU/EEA family-member basis clearly. The information should match the passport, relationship documents, EU/EEA citizen’s identity record, and Latvia travel plan.

    Step 3

    Arrange Relationship & EU/EEA Evidence

    Collect the EU/EEA citizen’s passport or identity document, proof of the family relationship, dependency evidence where relevant, and records showing that the applicant will travel with or join the citizen in Latvia.

    Step 4

    Prepare Applicant Documents

    Prepare the applicant’s passport, photographs, cover letter, itinerary, accommodation or residence evidence, status documents from Bangladesh, civil records, and minor documents where applicable. Arrange translations or formal certification where required.

    Step 5

    Book Appointment at Visa Application Centre

    Arrange submission through the Sweden Visa Application Centre in Dhaka, which accepts Latvia short-stay applications under the representation arrangement. Select the EU/EEA family-member category correctly, retain the appointment confirmation, and organize the file in A4 format.

    Step 6

    Submit Application & Provide Biometrics

    Attend the submission in person with the application and passport, provide biometric information where required, and complete any applicable VFS or optional-service payments. The visa fee is waived only when the qualifying EU/EEA conditions are established.

    Step 7

    Track Application & Verify Visa

    Use the VFS reference number to follow the application. After the decision, collect the passport or receive it by courier if selected, then check the name, passport number, validity, entries, and permitted stay before travelling.
