    The Ireland Family Members of EU/EEA/Swiss Citizens Visa is a single-journey Short Stay C visa for visa-required non-EEA nationals accompanying or joining an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen who is exercising, or plans to exercise, free movement rights in Ireland under Directive 2004/38/EC. This page covers the AVATS subtypes for spouse/civil partner, de facto partner, and other qualifying or permitted family members. Spouses/civil partners and certain direct relatives are qualifying family members, while de facto partners and some extended relatives are assessed as permitted family members.

    Applications from Bangladesh follow the New Delhi jurisdiction. The visa allows entry and a stay of up to 3 months; anyone remaining longer must apply in Ireland for the appropriate EU Treaty Rights Residence Card. Irish citizens are generally outside this Directive unless a specific free-movement exception applies. 

    Document Checklist

    1. Passport (Original): Original passport valid for at least 6 months after the intended date of departure from Ireland, with sufficient blank space for the visa. Submit the current passport together with the required copies.
    2. Previous Passport(s) & Travel History: Full clear copies of previous passports, including relevant visa and immigration pages, where available. Travel history should be disclosed consistently with the AVATS application.
    3. Photograph (Ireland Visa Format): Provide 2 recent colour passport photographs that meet Ireland visa photograph requirements. Sign your name and write the AVATS Visa Application Transaction Number on the back of each photograph.
    4. AVATS Application Summary Sheets: Printed AVATS summary sheets completed for the applicant, signed and dated. Keep the Visa Application Transaction Number and submit the summary sheets with the passport and supporting documents.
    5. Cover Letter: Applicant’s signed letter requesting consideration under Directive 2004/38/EC, identifying the family subtype, relationship to the EU/EEA/Swiss citizen, intended travel dates, and whether the applicant will accompany or join the citizen in Ireland.
    6. EU/EEA/Swiss Citizen Passport / Identity Evidence: Clear copy of the EU/EEA/Swiss citizen’s valid passport or national identity card showing the identity and nationality from which the applicant seeks to derive rights under the Directive.
    7. EU/EEA/Swiss Citizen Free Movement Evidence: Evidence that the EU/EEA/Swiss citizen resides in Ireland or will exercise qualifying free movement rights there when the applicant arrives, such as employment, self-employment, study where applicable, self-sufficiency, residence, or a signed statement confirming the intended move.
    8. Spouse / Civil Partner Relationship Evidence: For the spouse/civil partner subtype, provide the valid marriage or recognised civil-partnership certificate and other relevant civil-status records establishing the legal relationship.
    9. De Facto Partner Relationship Evidence: For the de facto partner subtype, provide dated evidence of a genuine and durable relationship, including cohabitation and shared-life records showing that the relationship has existed for a substantial period and is intended to continue.
    10. Other Family Member / Dependency Evidence: For the “other” subtype, provide birth or family-link records and, where applicable, evidence of dependency, prior household membership, or a serious health condition requiring the personal care of the EU/EEA/Swiss citizen.
    11. Flight Reservation: Provisional flight itinerary/reservation showing the intended travel dates, consistent with the application. Applicants should avoid purchasing non-refundable travel tickets before a visa decision.
    12. Proof of Legal Residence in Bangladesh (where applicable): Applicants who are not Bangladeshi nationals should provide evidence of lawful residence in Bangladesh and normally show permission to remain for at least 3 months after the intended departure date from Ireland.
    13. Translations & Attestation of Public Documents: State-issued civil documents and supporting records must meet Irish translation and authentication requirements. Documents not in English or Irish require a full certified translation; non-EEA/Swiss state-issued civil documents may also require attestation or apostille as applicable.
    14. Minor Applicant Documents: For minors, provide birth certificate, parental consent, parent/legal guardian identification, proof of economic means of parents/legal guardian, and custody or guardianship documents where applicable. 

    Process Roadmap

    Step 1

    Confirm the Directive & Family Subtype

    Confirm that Directive 2004/38/EC applies and identify the correct family subtype: spouse/civil partner, de facto partner, or other qualifying/permitted family member.

    Step 2

    Complete AVATS & Print the Summary

    Complete AVATS for a single-journey Short Stay (C) application, choose the relevant Family Member of EU/EEA/Swiss citizen subtype, then print, sign, and date the summary sheets.

    Step 3

    Establish the Family Relationship

    Provide the relationship evidence for your subtype. De facto and other permitted-family cases should also document durability, dependency, household membership, or serious-care needs where relevant.

    Step 4

    Show the EU Citizen’s Free Movement Position

    Provide the EU/EEA/Swiss citizen’s identity and evidence that they are residing in Ireland or will exercise qualifying free movement rights there when you arrive.

    Step 5

    Follow the Bangladesh Submission Route

    Follow the AVATS directions. Bangladesh residents may submit by post to the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi or by appointment at the Ireland Visa Application Centre in Kolkata.

    Step 6

    Apply the Correct Fee Treatment & Submit

    Submit the signed AVATS summary, passport and supporting evidence. Qualifying family members are visa-fee exempt when Directive eligibility is established; permitted family members normally pay the single-entry fee.

    Step 7

    Travel & Complete the Residence Step

    If approved, travel with evidence that you are accompanying or joining the EU/EEA/Swiss citizen. For residence beyond 3 months, apply in Ireland for the appropriate EU Treaty Rights Residence Card.
