    Canada Study Permit - Post-Secondary Study from Bangladesh

    Study Permit for eligible college, university and other post-secondary programmes at Canadian designated learning institutions.

    A Canada Study Permit authorizes eligible international students to study at a designated learning institution (DLI). Bangladeshi nationals accepted into a qualifying post-secondary programme generally need a Study Permit before travelling to Canada, particularly where the programme is longer than 6 months. This page focuses on general post-secondary study such as diploma, certificate and undergraduate programmes; master’s, doctoral and Quebec applications have additional specific requirements.

    Applications are normally submitted online, followed by biometrics and an immigration medical examination where required. If approved from outside Canada, IRCC issues a port-of-entry letter of introduction and the required travel document; the Study Permit itself is normally issued on arrival in Canada. 

    Document Checklist

    1. Passport: Valid passport for the intended studies in Canada. Provide a clear colour copy of the biographical page and pages containing stamps, visas or other markings; the passport should remain valid for the planned travel and study period.
    2. Previous Passport(s) & Travel History: Copies of previous passport(s), visas and relevant entry/exit records to support the applicant's travel history and ensure consistency with the information declared in the application.
    3. IRCC Online Application, Forms & Personalized Checklist: Complete the Study Permit application online through the appropriate IRCC account and upload all required documents. Complete IMM 1294 and IMM 5707 (for applicants aged 18 or over); where applicable, include IMM 5257 SCH1 and any other forms requested by IRCC, then pay the applicable fees.
    4. Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a DLI: Provide the official acceptance letter from the Canadian designated learning institution showing the programme, tuition, start/end dates and registration information. Post-secondary DLIs must validate the LOA with IRCC.
    5. Provincial / Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL): Most post-secondary applicants must provide a valid PAL/TAL obtained through the DLI, unless an IRCC exemption applies. Quebec students follow separate CAQ requirements.
    6. Study Plan / Letter of Explanation: Provide a concise study plan explaining why you chose the programme and Canada, your academic and career progression, future goals and ties outside Canada. The Singapore visa-office checklist asks for a one-page study plan; include a CV where relevant.
    7. Academic & Language Evidence: Provide relevant transcripts, certificates, diplomas or degrees and language-test evidence supporting the admission and study plan, where applicable.
    8. Tuition / Scholarship Evidence: Provide tuition or deposit receipts where paid, together with scholarship, education-loan or institutional funding evidence where applicable.
    9. Proof of Financial Support: Show enough available funds for first-year tuition, living expenses and transportation. For programmes longer than one year, explain how the full duration will be funded.
    10. Financial Evidence & Source of Funds: For applications outside Quebec, IRCC currently requires CAD 22,895 in first-year living expenses for one applicant, excluding tuition and transportation. Provide 6 months of bank history and credible evidence of the source and availability of funds; sponsor support should include relationship and financial-capacity evidence.
    11. Proof of Occupation / Sponsor Income: Where relevant, provide employment letters, leave or study evidence, salary statements and recent payslips for the applicant or sponsor. These should be recent, consistent and support the declared income and financial plan.
    12. Business Evidence (where applicable): Self-employed applicants or sponsors may provide business registration, Trade License, ownership records, business bank statements, tax records and other evidence of active operations and income.
    13. Personal / Sponsor Tax & Financial Records: Personal TIN, Income Tax Return records and other financial evidence may be included where they support declared income, savings and economic circumstances.
    14. Proof of Legal Residence in Bangladesh (where applicable): Applicants who are not Bangladeshi nationals should provide evidence of lawful residence in Bangladesh.
    15. Civil Status Documents: Marriage certificate, birth certificate or other family documents may be included where relevant to the applicant, sponsor or accompanying family members.
    16. Medical Examination & Police Certificate: An immigration medical examination is generally required for applicants planning to stay more than 6 months who meet IRCC country/residence criteria; Bangladesh is currently on the IME-required list. A police certificate may also be requested.
    17. Minor Applicant Documents (where applicable): For applicants under 18, provide birth certificate, parental/guardian documents, consent and custodianship evidence where required. 

    Process Roadmap

    Step 1

    Confirm the Programme, DLI & Study Permit Requirement

    Confirm that the programme is at a Canadian DLI and requires a Study Permit. Check programme suitability, admission conditions and any PGWP considerations before proceeding.

    Step 2

    Obtain the LOA & PAL/TAL Where Required

    Secure the DLI letter of acceptance and, for most post-secondary applications, the required provincial or territorial attestation letter. Provide exemption evidence where applicable.

    Step 3

    Prepare the Study, Financial & Supporting Evidence

    Prepare the study plan, academic records, proof of funds and sponsor evidence, plus medical, police or other documents where required by IRCC or the Singapore visa office.

    Step 4

    Apply Online & Pay the IRCC Fees

    Submit the Study Permit application online and pay CAD 150 plus the biometrics fee where required. Follow the personalized IRCC document checklist.

    Step 5

    Receive the BIL & Give Biometrics

    If required, receive the IRCC Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL), then book a free biometric appointment and attend a Canada VAC in Bangladesh.

    Step 6

    IRCC Reviews the Study Permit Application

    IRCC assesses the study purpose, finances, admissibility and supporting evidence, verifies the LOA and may request medical results or additional documents.

    Step 7

    Passport Submission, Approval & Travel

    If approved, follow IRCC instructions for passport submission where requested. After return, check the visa details before travel.
