    Canada Study Permit - Minor Students (Primary & Secondary School) from Bangladesh

    Study Permit guidance for Bangladeshi children attending primary or secondary school in Canada.

    A Canada Study Permit allows eligible minor foreign nationals to study in Canada when a permit is required. Bangladeshi children applying from outside Canada for primary or secondary studies lasting 6 months or more generally need to obtain a Study Permit before travel. All Canadian primary and secondary schools are automatically designated learning institutions (DLIs), and applicants at these levels do not need a DLI number on the application.

    The application should clearly show the school arrangement, study purpose, funding and the child's care in Canada. Children under 17 who are not accompanied by a parent or legal guardian must have a custodian; for older minors, an officer may request one. Primary and secondary students are exempt from the PAL/TAL requirement, while Quebec students must meet the applicable CAQ rules. If approved, IRCC normally issues the required TRV for a Bangladeshi passport holder with the Study Permit approval. 

    Document Checklist

    1. Passport: Valid passport for the intended trip to Canada. Provide a clear colour copy of the biographical page and pages containing stamps, visas or other markings. The passport should remain valid for the planned travel and study period, as the Study Permit cannot be issued beyond passport validity.
    2. Previous Passport(s) & Travel History: Copies of previous passport(s), visas and relevant entry/exit records to support the applicant's travel history and ensure consistency with the information declared in the application.
    3. IRCC Online Application, Forms & Personalized Checklist: Complete the Study Permit application online through the appropriate IRCC account and upload all required documents. Complete IMM 1294; applicants aged 18 or over must also complete IMM 5707. Include IMM 5646 where custodianship applies and any additional forms requested by IRCC, then pay the applicable fees.
    4. Letter of Acceptance (LOA) / School Admission: Provide the acceptance letter from the Canadian primary or secondary school showing the student, grade or level, study dates and relevant fee or enrolment details. All primary and secondary schools are automatically DLIs and do not require a DLI number. An LOA exception may apply when a child applies with a parent who is simultaneously applying for a study or work permit.
    5. PAL/TAL Exemption / Quebec CAQ: Primary and secondary school applicants are exempt from the provincial or territorial attestation letter (PAL/TAL) requirement. If the child will study in Quebec, provide the required Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) and follow Quebec-specific requirements.
    6. Study Plan & Academic Evidence: Provide a concise study plan explaining why the child will study in Canada, the educational objective and the parents or guardians' immigration status in their country of residence. Include current or previous school records, report cards, transcripts or enrolment evidence where relevant. The Singapore visa-office checklist asks minor applicants to address these points in a one-page study plan.
    7. Custodianship, Parental Consent & Birth Certificate: Provide the child's birth certificate. A child under 17 studying without an accompanying parent or legal guardian must have a notarized Custodianship Declaration (IMM 5646). For minors travelling alone or with one parent, provide the applicable parental consent, parent identification and custody or guardianship documents.
    8. School Fees, Accommodation & Study Arrangements: Provide the school fee schedule and tuition or deposit receipts where available, together with boarding, homestay or accommodation arrangements where relevant. The documents should align with the school acceptance, intended study period and financial plan.
    9. Proof of Financial Support: Show sufficient funds for tuition, living expenses and return transportation. For one applicant outside Quebec, IRCC currently requires CAD 22,895 for first-year living expenses, excluding tuition and transportation. Provide 6 months of bank statement(s), together with a clear explanation of the source of funds.
    10. Parent / Guardian or Sponsor Financial Evidence: Provide recent employment letters, salary evidence, payslips, tax records and bank documents supporting the declared income and sponsorship. Where a parent or sponsor owns a business, include relevant business registration, Trade License, ownership, tax and financial records. If the sponsor is not a parent, explain the relationship and reason for support.
    11. Proof of Legal Residence in Bangladesh (where applicable): Applicants who are not Bangladeshi nationals should provide evidence of lawful residence in Bangladesh.
    12. Medical Examination, Biometrics & Additional Requirements: For studies exceeding 6 months, applicants who meet IRCC country/residence criteria generally require an immigration medical examination; Bangladesh is currently on the IME-required list. Children under 14 are exempt from biometrics, while applicants aged 14 or over generally provide biometrics unless another exemption applies. Submit any further evidence requested by IRCC.

    Step 1

    Confirm the School Level & Study Permit Requirement

    Confirm that the child will attend primary or secondary school and needs a Study Permit. Minors applying from outside Canada for studies of 6 months or more generally apply before travel; primary and secondary schools are automatically DLIs.

    Step 2

    Obtain School Acceptance & Check Attestation Rules

    Obtain the school acceptance letter where required. Primary and secondary students are exempt from PAL/TAL; Quebec students must meet the applicable CAQ requirements.

    Step 3

    Arrange Care, Consent & Financial Evidence

    Prepare custodianship or parental-consent documents where applicable, plus school fees, accommodation, sponsor evidence and sufficient funds for tuition, living costs and return travel.

    Step 4

    Apply Online & Pay the IRCC Fees

    Submit the Study Permit application online and pay CAD 150. Pay the CAD 85 biometrics fee only where biometrics apply; children under 14 are exempt.

    Step 5

    Complete Biometrics & Medical Requirements

    If biometrics apply, receive the IRCC Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL), then book a free VAC appointment in Bangladesh. Complete the immigration medical examination where required.

    Step 6

    IRCC Assesses the Minor Study Application

    IRCC reviews the school plan, care arrangements, finances, admissibility and supporting evidence, and may request additional documents or verification.

    Step 7

    Passport Submission, Approval & Entry

    If approved, follow IRCC passport-submission instructions where requested. After return, check the visa details before travel.
